Billies forge tie atop league.

Byline: Curtis Anderson The Register-Guard

PLEASANT HILL - Pleasant Hill moved into a tie for first place in the Sky-Em League baseball race on Thursday with a pressure-packed 4-3 victory over Marist in 10 innings.

But the Billies were in no mood to celebrate.

Not with one more regular-season game still to be played, and the conference title and state playoff seeding still to be decided.

`This was a big win for us,' said Pleasant Hill coach Steve Smith, whose Billies are now tied with Marist atop the league standings at 10-3. `We've had our backs against the wall with a game at Siuslaw yesterday and Marist today. Now we have to get ready for Junction City Junction City, city (1990 pop. 20,604), seat of Geary co., NE Kans., at the confluence of the Republican and Smoky Hill rivers; inc. 1859. The rail, trade, and processing center of an agricultural and dairy area, it grew as the supply point for nearby Fort Riley,  on Monday. Nothing gets any easier.'

The Billies do control their own destiny, however.

over Marist by virtue of a season sweep of the Spartans, and they can clinch the Sky-Em title with a win over the Tigers, who fell to 9-4 in league with a 4-3 loss at La Pine on Thursday.

Pleasant Hill is fortunate to be in that situation.

The Billies left 13 runners on base against Marist - leaving the bases loaded three times - before Drew Humphrey delivered a clutch two-out single in the bottom of the 10th to score Kyle Kordon with the winning run.

`I knew they would throw a curveball on the outside, so I just tried to get up on the plate,' said Humphrey, who had two of Pleasant Hill's eight hits and also pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The Billies grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third on RBI RBI

And then the Spartans went to work.
