A form of welfare in which capable adults are required to perform work, often in public-service jobs, as a condition of receiving aid.

Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wise., and Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., introduced legislation that would double from one year to two the amount of time recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF, often pronounced "TAN-if") is the July 1, 1997, successor to the Aid to Families with Dependent Children program, providing cash assistance to indigent American families with dependent children through the United States Department of  benefits could remain in postsecondary vocational education as an approved work activity.

The bill went to both the Education & the Workforce and Ways & Means committees in the House, and the Finance Committee in the Senate.
