The board of directors of Atlanta Life Insurance Company has named William A. "Bill" Clement, as chairman, effective April 1, 200l, it was announced today by Charles Cornelius, president and chief executive officer.

Clement has served as vice chairman since 1996. He will replace Gregory Baranco, who was chairman for seven years. Under Baranco's leadership, Atlanta Life developed a strategic business model that Cornelius said created strong growth for the company and helped post net gains in income for the last five years.

"When Mr. Baranco became chairman, we were a single source enterprise faced with making changes to become more competitive," Cornelius said. "Today, not only have we expanded our revenue sources but we are most profitable in those new arenas. Our incoming board chairman brings experience and knowledge of the insurance business that can only add value to our efforts."
