Does this signal a major push from the Bilderbergers for Turkey's accession to membership in the European Union European Union (EU), name given since the ratification (Nov., 1993) of the Treaty of European Union, or Maastricht Treaty, to the European Community ? Most likely yes, as the Bilderberg-EU drumbeat See Drumbeat 2000. for Turkey's EU membership has been increasing, despite the fact that opinion polls show overwhelming opposition by citizens of EU countries to the move. EU voters know that if Turkey is admitted, three major negatives will occur in rapid order: 1) millions of poor Turks will flood into Europe to compete for jobs and to take advantage of social welfare programs; 2) following the pattern of EU "enlargement" with other countries, billions of euros in EU development aid will flow into Turkey; and 3) Europe's increasingly aggressive Muslim population will dramatically increase. Beginning in the 1980s, the attendance list of the annual gatherings of the private Bilderberg group would show one or two participants from Turkey, out of a total of one hundred or so attendees. That gradually increased to three or four. This year, with the attendance total at approximately 130, Turkish participants totaled six, just slightly less than the representatives from Great Britain and Germany (each of which sent eight) and more than many of the European regulars such as Italy (five), Belgium (five), Austria (four), Portugal (three), and Spain (three). The Turkish delegation this year included: Egemon Bagis, Member of Parliament and foreign policy adviser to the prime minister; Umit N. Boyner, member of the executive board of Boyner Holding; Mustaf V.
