Biking paramedics get their first Mersey tests at visitor attractions; THE OPEN NEW COURSE RECORD.

NEW first aid mountain bikes have been pioneered in Merseyside as the region hosts two of the visitor events of 2008.

The North West Ambulance Service The North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust was formed on 1 July 2006 as part of Health Minister Lord Warner's plans to reduce the number of NHS ambulance service trusts operating in the United Kingdom to 12.  NHS Trust National Health Service Trusts (NHS Trusts) provide many services of the National Health Service in England and Wales. They are not trusts in the legal sense but are in effect public sector corporations.  (NWAS NWAS North West Ambulance Service (UK)

Supported by emergency ambulance, the mountain bikes carry two panniers full of equipment and allow medics to reach patients in hard-to-access or crowded places.

They carry a scaled down version of the full paramedic par·a·med·ic

Mike Allen, a paramedic from Chester, was among four people who attended training in London to use the bikes.

He said: "I've been using the bike at the Open Golf and it allowed quick and easy access across the course.

"The bikes have had a fantastic response in London where they are used in the parks, city centre and Heathrow Airport.

"People are surprised to see a bike and we don't have sirens and lights just a normal bell, but the response has been great."

Two cycles were in operation for the golf, but seven will be used today covering promenades in Wallasey, New Brighton, Crosby, Otterspool and Liverpool city centre.
