Biker dies in crash.

A motorcyclist was killed in a head-on crash with a bus yesterday.

The accident happened between Burnopfield and Hamsterley Mill in north-west Durham at 7am, when the motorbike crashed with a single-decker Go North-East bus.

The motorcyclist, believed to be in his forties, died at the scene.

Witnesses are asked to call police on [phone].

To the rescue

FIREFIGHTERS are helping to modernise fire and rescue services in Ghana.

Two firefighters from the African nation are in the North shadowing members of the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

They are learning how road crashes are dealt with and how similar skills can be developed back home.

JK Mensah, 33, and Dominic Abbey, 35, from Ghana's capital Accra, are in the North-East for two weeks.

Sewer starts

WORK to reduce the risk of property flooding starts in Newton Hall, Durham City, next week, when Northumbrian Water begins to build a pounds 700,000 550-metre section of sewer.

Heavy rain has led to flooding in 12 properties in Lindisfarne Road, Staindrop Road, Dilston Road, Canterbury Road and Blanchland Avenue.

Details of the five-month project will be available at a customer information session at Northumbrian Water's head office in Abbey Road, Durham, from 5pm to 7.30pm tomorrow. (Wed)

Driver rescued

A DRIVER was rescued from his lorry by firefighters after it overturned near a roundabout yesterday.

Crews used a ladder to reach the man who was trapped after his lorry overturned at the roundabout on the A68 close to Heighington, near Bishop Auckland, County Durham, at 8.35am.
