The move represents a victory for Wilson and others who tried for years to convince the city to fund a new route in Glenwood that would allow bicyclists and pedestrians to avoid a particularly treacherous stretch of Franklin Boulevard where bike lanes bike lane ncarril m de bicicleta; carril m bici

"We've needed this bike path for a long time," Wilson said. "What's there now is an accident - or (a case of) someone getting killed - just waiting to happen."

Last year, Wilson was part of a group that participated in a pair of public demonstrations - including one at Springfield City Hall during a City Council meeting - and demanded that a path be built to connect East 14th Avenue to Glenwood Boulevard.

After initially delaying any action on the proposal, Springfield officials ultimately responded to the outcry. They agreed last month to spend about $95,000 to hire Wildish Construction Co. of Eugene to build the new path. Street lights will be installed along the length of the new route.

The work could be completed by the end of this year, city Community Development Manager John Tamulonis said.

The project is the first capital improvement project funded in Glenwood with urban renewal tax revenue. Springfield voters in 2004 approved designating Glenwood as an urban renewal district. "It's nice to see how this has worked out," said Joany Armstead, a Glenwood resident who serves on a committee that advises city officials on urban renewal projects in her community.

"We have a lot of bicyclists in the neighborhood, and what they go through now (on Franklin) is not safe," Armstead said. "I think (the new path) will get a lot of use."

Armstead said neighborhood residents will put in native plants and flowers along the new path.

Tamulonis said that probably won't happen until the city acquires the state-owned route and redesigns Franklin. Preliminary plans are in the works, although it may be several years before widespread improvements are made.
