"REPENT and be changed", that was the message to homosexuals from the Bishop of Rochester last week.

Bishop Dr Michael Nazir-Ali's outrageous statement came as thousands marched through London as part of the annual gay Pride event. He insisted that he was only defending traditional Bible teachings and that the church should not be "rolled over by culture". The fact that he has a doctorate would suggest at least a modicum of intelligence and intellect but I find it hard to understand how any educated person can possibly think like that in this day and age. His comments have sparked anger, with gay rights activist Peter Tatchell calling on him to repent his homophobia and going on to say: "His prejudice goes against Christ's gospel of love and compassion". He currently lives in the UK with long term partner Scott Gill.  also weighed in calling the bishop "bigoted" and telling him to "stop talking rubbish".

.THIS week also saw the creation of a coalition of evangelical and Anglo-Catholic parishes supported by Dr Nazir-Ali, that some are calling an attempt to create a church within a church. Things aren't all bad in the Anglican Communion Anglican Communion, the body of churches in all parts of the world that are in communion with the Church of England (see England, Church of). The communion is composed of regional churches, provinces, and separate dioceses bound together by mutual loyalty as  though as in a couple of weeks time the much more enlightened Episcopal church Episcopal Church, Anglican church of the United States. Its separate existence as an American ecclesiastical body with its own episcopate began in 1789. Doctrine and Organization
in the US is expected to endorse liturgies for same sex marriage and the creation of more gay bishops.

.NAZIR-ALI is Britain's first and only Asian bishop and announced in March that he will stand down in September to become a defender of persecuted Christians - an ironic mission for someone who could be described as the persecutor-in-chief of gay Christians.

.NEWS From Nowhere, the radical bookshop on Bold Street, needs your help. It's the country's oldest bookshop of its kind and stocks many lesbian and gay books and DVDs that can't be found anywhere else on Merseyside. The not-for-profit cooperative is struggling with cash-flow and is asking for assistance and has suggested a number of ways in which people can help. The most obvious way is of course to donate cash but you could also provide an interest-free loan. Another option is a credit loan where you lodge money with the shop to be used against future purchases. The shop also has an office for rent and a room in a flat. You could of course just go and buy a load of books - NfN can order any book in print.
