Bigfreeze brings cheer to Stockton.

Despite the unusually warm weather Stockton was transformed into a winter wonderland with a festive new ice rink.

The full size synthetic rink takes pride of place in Dovecot Street - and whatever the weather the special no-melt rink looks, feels and

skates just like the real thing.

To add to the frosty feel a couple of Antarctic explorers helped open the Christmas attraction on Thursday.

The ice rink has been built as the town celebrates the fourth week of the five-week long Stockton Sparkles Festival.

Shoppers and visitors have also been treated to performances by street entertainers, including The Skating Snowman and the Ice Queen.

Councillor Jean O'Donnell, Stockton Council's cabinet member for arts, leisure and culture, said: "After last week's theme of Fire, this week saw the temperature drop with the arrival of the ice rink and I am sure everyone will get their skates on and enjoy the experience.

"Stockton Sparkles has proved a huge success and the Town Centre has been buzzing with festive spirit as people enjoy the shopping and entertainment."

The rink will be open daily until Wednesday from noon until 7pm. The fun is free, including skate hire. It is also available for hire for Christmas parties, schools, clubs and corporate entertainment. Discounts are available. * For details call the Town Centre Manager, Sue Burgess, on 01642 527569.
