"This demonstration reinforces the power of BigBand Networks' platform solution across media and services, extending the company's leadership in HDTV infrastructure and VOD edge processing," said S.V. Vasudevan, chief architect of BigBand Networks. "In increasingly competitive markets, broadband network operators aim to provide subscribers with the highest quality rich media experiences. BigBand Networks offers solutions that enhance efficiency in terms of economics, time-to-market and management, enabling emerging services such as the extension of HDTV quality to VOD and network-based PVR See DVR. ."

HDTV and VOD are two dynamically growing services that cable operators use to provide subscribers with compelling and distinctive experiences. According to recently released figures from NCTA, more than 45 million homes are passed cable systems that offer broadcast HDTV, growth of more than 20 percent since the first of the year. Market research firm The Yankee Group estimates that VOD was available to nearly seven million digital cable homes (equating to more than 30 million homes passed) at the end of 2002, with expectations for that figure to grow to 37 million digital cable homes by the end of 2006. BigBand Networks provides cable operators with infrastructure solutions that enhance capabilities to provide HDTV and VOD, among other services.
