Big year ahead for NYSD runners.

ONE of the most competitive seasons ever is anticipated as the North Yorkshire North Yorkshire, county (1991 pop. 698,800), 3,209 sq mi (8,313 sq km), N England. The county comprises the districts of Craven, Hambleton, Harrogate, Richmondshire, Ryedale, Scarborough, Selby, and York.  and South Durham Cross Country League kicks off on Sunday.

The opening event takes place over a slightly undulating course near Croft Circuit Croft Circuit is a motor racing circuit in North Yorkshire, England. The tarmac circuit is just over 2 miles long and is based on the lands of an airfield, but has long since moved on from being a basic airfield circuit.  and will be hosted by Darlington Harriers.

The meeting starts at 1pm with the Under-13 boys' race and with the senior ladies contesting a four-mile course - longer than usual - and the senior men starting at 2.20pm over a five-mile course - shorter than usual.

There will be particular interest in the senior men's section this season as many of the league's younger runners have fought their way into leading positions and will be battling for the title.

Leading contenders are likely to be the strong New Marske squad of Ricky Stevenson, Dominic Shaw, Andrew Wiles For the French mathematician with work in the area of elliptic curves, see .

, and Lewis Gamble-Thompson, Loftus and Whitby's Alex Duffield and Lewis Rodgers and Middlesbrough Mandale's Richard Morrell.

The senior ladies' championship will see Middlesbrough and Cleveland's Carolyn Summersgill back in action following a length spell out through injury.

She is the reigning champion and her nearest challengers are likely to be training partner Marie Stansmore, now with North Yorkshire Moors AC, Angharad Owen (Loftus and Whitby), Jessica Russon (New Marske and Hartlepool's Tracy Waller.

LATER in the season the major championships will be taking place.

Particular interest will be in the Nationals which are back in the North and will be held over the tough Roundhay Park course in Leeds, with its notorious 'Heartbreak Hill'.
