Big shots.
Walt Disney Co. and four Chinese investment firms will invest in an
11 percent stake, or about $250 million, in the National Basketball
Association's subsidiary in China. The NBA and Disney, which
broadcasts the league's games through its ABC and ESPN
subsidiaries, will be joined by two Chinese banks, investment firm
Legend Holdings, which owns the largest share of computer maker Lenovo
as well as a firm owned by Li Ka-shing, the Hong Kong billionaire who
controls one of China's largest companies, Hutchison Whampoa.
Burbank-based Disney, which hadn't officially announced the deal at
press time, will own 5 percent with the tour Chinese investors
collectively owning 6 percent. NBA. China will have the right to create
teams in China, and will own all broadcasting rights and merchandising
and will also retain a portion of ownership in teams created in that
country.
