THIS tiny baby monkey, which has been bred at Twycross Zoo, is only the size of a mobile phone but it could mark a big step towards saving the species.

The rare red titi monkey titi monkey

one of the many small New World monkeys, about the size of a squirrel with dense, short fur and a long, nonprehensile tail. It comes in several colors including black with white face, collar and hands. Called also Callicebus spp.

Deforestation deforestation

Process of clearing forests. Rates of deforestation are particularly high in the tropics, where the poor quality of the soil has led to the practice of routine clear-cutting to make new soil available for agricultural use.
in its natural habitat of South America, from Colombia to Brazil, Peru and north Paraguay, has led to a dramatic drop in its numbers.

The repopulation repopulation

1. introduction of new animals to a farm or part of it after it has been depopulated for health or production reasons.

2. the additional growth of normal cells around a tumor that is being destroyed by irradiation.
of the species is made more difficult because titis are monogamous, mating for life.

The monkey is so small that keepers at Twycross Zoo will have to wait several weeks before discovering its gender.

Zoo spokesman Kim Riley said: "The birth is exciting and we hope it will mark the beginning of a successful breeding programme.

"The red titis are rare and this is the first time this zoo has had one born here."

The zoo, near Atherstone, has the world's largest collection of primates.
