Big role awaits NLC's Fraser at childrens and families summit.

NLC President Donald M. Fraser, mayor of Minneapolis, will have a prominent role in this week's National Summit on Children and Families in Washington.

The two-day conference on April 1-2 is the concluding event in the four-year work program of the National Commission on Children, chaired by Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.V.) and widely known as the Rockefeller Commission.

Fraser will join Gov. Roy Romer of Colorado, chairman of the National Governors Association, and top officials from the Clinton Administration and Congress in the closing session of the meeting. It will be an extended dialog on next steps and a context for action at the federal, state and local levels as the distinguished bipartisan commission winds up its-work. Hillary Rodham Clinton has been invited to represent the White House at the session, which is entitled, "New Leadership--New Momentum."

Nearly 1,000 leaders and concerned citizens from many sectors of American life are expected to attend the summit and engage with an array of leading figures involved in examining, shaping and advancing policies and attitudes about families and children in America.

"New leadership in the White House and the Congress has sparked renewed confidence that this nation can take positive steps to address the critical needs of our children and faroflies--to improve the conditions of their lives and to offer them and society a secure and prosperous future," Rockefeller said in his letter of invitation to the summit attendees.

"As we conclude our work, I believe it is critically important for America's leaders to come together to launch a new phase of creative activism that will move the children's agenda forward in Washington and in communities nationwide," Rockefeller said.
