Big names tune up for a new season; Classical.

AHOST of world-class musicians are lined up for a new season of classical music concerts in the Midlands.

Royal Opera conductor Sir Simon Rattle and pianists Murray Perahia, Mitsuko Uchida and Leif Ove Andsnes Leif Ove Andsnes is a Norwegian pianist. He studied with Jiří Hlinka at the Grieg Academy of Music in Bergen. He is an ardent champion of the works of Edvard Grieg.  are just some of the stars appearing at Birmingham's Symphony Hall and Town Hall 2008/09 season starting this autumn.

The centrepiece of the season is a weekend residency next March by the Royal Opera with their music director Antonio Pappano for Britten's War Requiem - written for the consecration of Coventry Cathedral - and Verdi's Requiem.

Earlier season highlights include a chance to catch rising star cellist Quirine Viersen playing Elgar's cello concerto with the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra on October 14, guitarist John Williams on November 6, Uchida playing Mozart with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe The Chamber Orchestra of Europe (COE), established in 1981, represents 15 nationalities amongst its 50 members. The players pursue parallel careers as international soloists, members of eminent chamber groups, and as tutors and professors of music.  on November 23, and Rattle conducting Schumann with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) is a British period instrument orchestra. Formed in 1986 by a group of players, it does not have a principal conductor, but rather is led artistically by a board of musicians elected by the musicians themselves.  on December 19.

Later highlights include Perahia in recital on January 31 and Andsnes playing Mozart and Beethoven Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had a powerful influence on the work of Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven knew much of Mozart's work, and modeled a number of his own compositions on works of Mozart. In addition, the two may have met briefly in Vienna in 1787.  on May 17.

There are also concerts to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Mendelssohn, the 250th anniversary of the death of Handel and the 350th anniversary of the birth of Purcell.

Pianist Angela Hewitt, cellist Natalie Clein and violinist Alina Ibragimova will end the season in style next May playing Bach.

The season kicks off on October 7 with Mahler'smighty third symphony.
