Big hospitals revamp.

Byline: By Julia Kennard

Health officials approved a pounds 300m transformation of hospital treatment on Tyneside yesterday that will see an extra 99 beds and several new specialist centres in Newcastle.

A special meeting of the Northumberland, Tyne and Wear Tyne and Wear, former metropolitan county, NE England. Created in the 1974 local government reorganization, the county embraced the Newcastle upon Tyne conurbation and comprised five metropolitan districts: Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, South Tyneside,  Strategic Health Authority rubber stamped the business case for the redevelopment of trauma services and a new specialist children's wing at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary The Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom, was opened on 11 July 1906 by Edward VII on ten acres of Town Moor given by the Corporation and Freemen.  and new cancer and kidney centres at the Freeman Hospital The Freeman Hospital is an 800-bed tertiary referral centre in Newcastle, England.

The proposals will now be sent to the Government for final review and, subject to them being given the go-ahead, work could start as early as this coming April.

If the work is given the green light then new buildings will be constructed at the Freeman Hospital to house a new Northern Centre for Cancer Treatment and a new Renal Services Centre. It is hoped the shake-up will cut the waiting time that many cancer patients in the North-East currently face for certain radiotherapy treatment at hospitals in Newcastle and will create an extra 99 beds in the RVI.

David Flory, chief executive of Northumberland, Tyne and Wear Strategic Health Authority, said the major redevelopment of Newcastle hospitals was the culmination of years of planning and would result in significant benefits for patients and staff.

He said: "This is a plan to transform the quality of hospital services in Newcastle by moving clinical services out of old, out-dated buildings and into new, modern accommodation.

"There will be 99 extra beds, more critical care facilities, additional operating theatres, extra radiotherapy treatment machines and more kidney dialysis Dialysis, Kidney Definition

"Ultimately, all acute services from Newcastle General Hospital will be moved to purpose designed buildings at the Freeman Hospital and the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

"This will improve the links between specialities so that they can work together more effectively and will result in significant benefits for patients and staff.

"Also, the new facilities will assist the universities in training future generations of doctors, nurses and therapists."
