Spanish telecom giant Telefonica controls 59% of all high-speed Internet customers connected via home phone lines in Brazil, a market of about a half a million, according to The Yankee Group. Brazil's cable-TV providers of broadband split up their much-smaller customer base just 52,000 total. The leader there is No. 1 cable television provider NET The total number of paid Internet users in Brazil, both broadband and dial-up, will be 5.4 million in 2003, according to Yankee.
