TOP high street store chains are keen to move into Lichfield after plans were unveiled for a pounds 80 million shops and leisure development, it was claimed today.

A target has been set to get the Birmingham Road complex built and in business by 2010 and S Harrison Development, the Yorkshire firm chosen to build it, said there was "significant interest" from retailers keen to set up shop in Lichfield.

"It's too early to name names, but we've been extremely encouraged by the number and quality of the retailers who have already approached us and are interested in taking space, said Harrison development director David Clancy.

"Many High Street brand leaders are on the list. When they sign up, it will have a positive impact on Lichfield's appeal as a regional retail and leisure attraction."

The developer hopes to attract a big name department store to provide the anchor for the whole complex.

The scheme will link the Birmingham Road area to other shopping sites in the historic cathedral city.

There are proposals for a cinema, hotel, more than 25 shops and restaurants, and a new public transport hub.

The site is currently occupied by Lichfield's bus station, police station and a multi-storey car park.
