Big drive as Davies conquers her nerves.

Laura Davies Laura Jane Davies CBE (born October 5, 1963 in Coventry, England) is an English professional golfer.

She is considered the most accomplished English female golfer of modern times[1] [2]
may have won four majors and 56 women's tournaments, but nothing prepared her for the pressures of being the first woman to tee off in a European Tour event.

The former world number one hardly slept last night in dreaded anticipation of her first tee shot at the ANZ Championship The ANZ Championship will be a netball competition contested between five teams each from both Australia and New Zealand. It will launch in 2008.

In the modified stableford points format used, her five bogeys and two birdies translated into minus one point - 19 off the clubhouse lead - but she is confident a good showing tomorrow will be enough to make the cut.

"Minus one to the field looks terrible, to the guys who are shooting 18 points, but in a way I am quite pleased with it," said Davies, who was playing her first competitive round in two months.

"I have given myself a chance if I have a really good day tomorrow to make the cut. If I can get seven or eight points tomorrow I can make the cut. If I was minus 10 I would be out of it."

Davies finished level with playing partner Jean van der Velde on minus one.
