Big blue brings "power, performance, productivity" to new tractors, balers, combines.

In speaking to our group of journalists, Allen Rider, vice president, North America, agricultural business, summed up New Holland's feelings about their new lines of equipment this way. "You'll notice that we've used some promotional material here that features our PowerShift logo. That is particularly appropriate, because we think the class of 2002 products are going to help bring about a real shift in power in the tractor business."

The new mid-size (TM) line (six models from 95 to 160 PTO hp) of tractors, the new row crop (TG) line (four models from 170 to 240 PTO hp) replacing the old Genesis models, the brand new baler (BR) series (eight models with five chamber sizes) and the new CR line of combines (four models from 255 to 370 hp) all emphasize the 3Ps--power, performance and productivity--that operators are looking for in today's equipment market.

One point was emphasized again and again throughout the presentations: that the product improvements and enhancements were the direct result of what customers had been requesting. And apparently, New Holland customers have been pretty demanding in what they've been asking for, because these new New Holland products represent some significant advancements.

It should be mentioned that we are now beginning to see the real effects of the Case IH and New Holland merger, as common platforms are becoming apparent. Not that the C-IH and NH products are without their points of differentiation, but there are, and should be, distinct similarities between the TM and the MXM Maxxum, the TG and the MX Magnum tractor lines.

BR Round Balers

The first round baler upgrade since 1990, New Holland claims the BR series offers bale sizes up to five-by-six feet. It offers new optional XtraSweep pickups in two versions, 71-inches and 82-inches tine-to-tine, the widest in the industry according to New Holland. And the all-new EdgeWrap net wrapping system (available in all models except for the four-by-four-foot size) wraps 64-67 inches over a 60-inch bale without special net material. Lastly, Auto Wrap, the automatic twine tying system, is now available with in-cab gauges and easy access for routine maintenance.

Bale Slice, a New Holland exclusive bale slicing system to improve palatability for cattle, is available on all four-by-five-foot and five-by-six-foot models. Additionally, the all new CropCutter rotary feeder-cutting system, available on the four-by five-foot chamber size, cuts crop into pieces as short as 2.6 inches, before it enters the bale chamber to make feed easier to mix, easier to digest

TM Series Tractors

The new TM series tractors "effectively marries high-technology features with power and performance," said Jon Stephenson, product training manager, 100+ hp tractors, New Holland.

Fully programmable electro-hydraulics provides flexibility in timing and flow adjustments to each of the remotes. The Power Command powershift transmission (available on the new extended wheel base models -- TM 175 and TM 190) eliminates the guesswork of choosing a gear for a particular application, shifting gears automatically based on the engine speed, engine load and ground speed set by the operator. A shuttle transmission allows fast shifting from forward to reverse at the touch of a lever, without clutching. The TM 175 and TM 190 models also feature the Custom Headland System, which records up to 28 tasks, including three-point raise and lower functions, transmission gear, engine rpms and cruise control engagement and repeats them at the touch of a button.

TM models in the 95 to 125-hp range offer the Range Command semi-powershift transmission, which provides nine speeds between two-to seven-mph. Range Command's shuttle transmission also allows for changing direction at the touch of a lever.

The TM is also available with the SuperSteer front axle that turns sharper and faster than any other comparable tractors. The SuperSteer FWD axle delivers a 65-degree maximum turn angle -- reportedly up to 30% sharper and faster than competitive brand tractors. Another innovation is the TerraLock electronic traction system (standard equipment on all FWD TM models) that combines fully automatic FWD with front and rear differential lock engagement, for full-drive capability through all four wheels for more positive traction.

TG Series Tractors

Available in four models -- ranging from 170 to 240 PTO hp -- the TG series delivers, "dynamic styling combined with comfort and convenience features (and) the ability to efficiently deliver power to the ground, making the TG a serious performer in the row crop tractor marketplace," according to Roger Lewno, specialist for high horsepower tractors.

The TG series tractors have the ability to automatically match transmission and rpm settings to varying load conditions. The engine operates at 2200 rpm and is mounted directly to the transmission for efficient transfer of power. And the hydraulics feature the optional Megaflow system, which offers 68 gpm of hydraulic flow through two separate pumps.

The dynamic ride control system allows the 3-point hitch to act like a shock absorber, reducing shock throughout the tractor and implement for less wear and easier transportability. The ride is further enhanced by the optional TerraGlide suspended FWD axle, which allows over four inches of shift, keeping the front tires in contact with the ground on uneven terrain and at the higher transport speeds. The result is less shock and vibration, and improved traction and steering.

The TG series also offer the optional SuperSteer FWD axle. Models equipped with SuperSteer allow the operator to execute simple turns at the headland -- even on narrow 20- and 22- inch row spacing, or on 30-inch rows with an eight-row implement

The ergonomics inside the cab allow the operator to be more productive, too The TG features drive controls that are located within the armrest, and the optional AutoComfort seat suspension automatically dampens out

Improved safety features include optional dual strobe lights, backup alarm, larger mirrors and superb visibility from all angles. The TG's performance monitor displays data that includes acres covered, percent slippage and in the two largest models, fuel efficiency and power generated.

CR Series Combine

With design elements that remind one more of a jet ski than a combine, New Holland's latest entry into the grain harvesting equipment market is the CR series Twin Rotor combine... with best-in-class features in grain handling, tank capacity, ergonomic cab design and maneuverability. "We've designed a product that can go toe-tote with the competition and win," said Gary Wojcik, product marketing manager for New Holland harvesting equipment.

Four models ranging in horsepower from 255 hp to 370 hp are available, and all feature head attachments and hydraulics located together on the left side, so the operator can change heads quickly and easily.

According to Wojcik, one of the most significant advancements of the CR combines is the SLS self-leveling cleaning system. Using a unique grain pan system, it stratifies grain and spreads it evenly as it feeds into the cleaning sieve area. The grain pan, as well as the complete cleaning system, remains level at all times which eliminates the need for grain pan dividers to keep the grain distributed.

The SLS cleaning system allows the grain to self-level as it is shuffled rearward to the sieve area, which makes for more efficient cleaning. Plus, a sensor reads changes in terrain and automatically levels the cleaning system up to a 17% slope - to keep the combine's cleaning system running at peak efficiency. With no grain shifts caused by uneven terrain, more grain is captured in the tank and not left on the ground.

The larger CR models feature a tank capacity of 300+ bushels, eliminating the need to retrofit the grain tank with non-standard issue tanks. For unloading, 18-to-21-foot augers, deliver grain at a three bushels per second.

Powered by a six-cylinder diesel, inter-cooled engine, all models (except the smallest, the CR920) are electronically managed to shift power when needed, so there's no need to slow down when unloading. The four-valve per cylinder overhead cam system on the CR960 and CR970 engines, feature full electronic authority over the engine, to better manage fuel consumption and power.

A new feature, the Advanced Stone Protection (ASP) utilizes four sensors that differentiate rocks from grain, and combines that electronic detection with mechanical ejection without impeding crop feeding or causing grain damage.

The CR series combines, like their tractor cousins, offer a tighter turning radius -- up to 40 percent shorter radius -- than the others on the market.

The last major development is in the cab. The Harvest Suite cab is luxurious.., with more interior space (95 cu. ft), more glass area and superb lighting than ever before. Controls move with the operator, contained in an inline, multi-function handle. If the operator does need to leave the cab , gull-wing shaped shields provide easy access to a lighted work area. A swing-out platform and exterior walkway are also included.
