Big V Supermarkets, Inc. Announces Promotions.

FLORIDA, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 9, 2001

James Toopes, President and Chief Executive Officer of Big V Supermarkets, Inc., today announced the promotion of five senior executives.

Steve Hastings has been promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

The officer of a firm responsible for day-to-day management, usually the president or an executive vice-president.
, responsible for overseeing all operating and merchandising functions as well the construction, loss prevention and information technology divisions of the Company. Philip Gass has become Senior Vice President, Merchandising. Tony Moccio, former Vice President - Controller has been named Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Kay Hastings has been named Senior Vice President, Human Resources The fancy word for "people." The human resources department within an organization, years ago known as the "personnel department," manages the administrative aspects of the employees. . Joe Ward has been named Vice President, Operations.

"These individuals' experience and talents will be invaluable as we move forward with the implementation of a major restructuring at the Company. We are pleased and fortunate to have people with this breadth and depth of experience in our organization assuming these responsibilities," Mr. Toopes said.

Steve Hastings joined Big V in July 1999 as Executive Vice President of Operations. As COO, he will report directly to the President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. . Mr. Hastings has over 25 years of experience in the grocery retail business, including operations, store planning, new store development, loss prevention and general merchandise experience.

Philip Gass came to Big V in October 2000 as Vice President of Perishables. He has an extensive background in the Bakery/Deli and Food Services food services Hospital services A 24/7 department in a hospital that provides for the nutritional needs of inpatients–eg, those needing special diets, preparing meals and transporting them to the floor and, through the cafeteria, the hospital staff and  operations of major distribution and retail companies with expertise in procurement The fancy word for "purchasing." The procurement department within an organization manages all the major purchases. , sales, margins, inventories and retail marketing.

Mr. Gass will replace David Montoya, who has left the Company to pursue other interests.

Tony Moccio, who joined Big V in November 1996, had previously been Vice President - Controller and Assistant Controller for Financial Reporting. Mr. Moccio is a CPA (Computer Press Association, Landing, NJ) An earlier membership organization founded in 1983 that promoted excellence in computer journalism. Its annual awards honored outstanding examples in print, broadcast and electronic media. The CPA disbanded in 2000.  and has worked for both accounting and retail firms.

Kay Hastings joined Big V in July 1999 as Vice President of Human Resources and has an extensive background in training, benefits, operations and labor relations.

Joe Ward began his career with Big V in 1981 and has held numerous operational positions, including Regional Manager and District Manager.
