Big V Pharmacies, a leading drug store retailer in Ontario, Canada, has chosen Checkpoint's RF EAS systems for chainwide implementation to prepare for Impulse@ source tagging. The Impulse@ program coordinates retailer and manufacturer logistics for the purpose of embedding Checkpoint's paper-thin RF labels into products or packaging before they reach the retail level. Source-tagged labels are invisible to customers and employees.

Over the past year, Big V Pharmacies tested both RF and acousto-magnetic EAS systems. According to Paul Kuras, vice president of operations, Checkpoint's RF technology was chosen because of its user-friendliness and flexibility. "We tested both RF and acousto-magnetic technologies and found RF technology was the most suited to our needs," said Mr. Kuras. "RF source tags are easily applied at the point of manufacture, they will enable more open merchandising of higher cost items, and deactivation de·ac·ti·vate

"Last year, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS NACDS National Association of Chain Drug Stores ) announced that it would not endorse one technology as the 'standard' for source tagging and it was for the marketplace to decide," said Mr. Dowd. "However a number of leading drug retailers have already chosen Checkpoint's RF technology, including: Walgreen Co., Rite Aid Corporation, Thrift Drug Inc., Abor Drugs Inc., Phar Mor, Drug Emporium, Inc., Smith's Food & Drug Centers, Osco and Save-on, and Thrifty Payless."
