approach for filling open shifts, empowering employees, and supporting effective staffing practices.

BidShift provides a framework for optimizing the existing workforce across both hospitals, which can now share staff resources to fill shift vacancies through use of the program. Nurses, patient care technicians, unit secretaries, respiratory therapists, and paramedics use the technology to log on from work or home, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to identify available shifts and make online requests for shifts that match their experience and lifestyle interests. The web-based program transforms what traditionally has been a time and labor-intensive manual process and reduces reliance on expensive contract labor.

"BidShift has driven staffing accountability to the front line where it should be, which supports our professional practice model of shared governance," stated Sherry Danello, vice president, patient care services at St. Joseph's/Candler. "The technology brings both flexibility and consistency to how we staff and schedule. We are excited to implement a program that lets us reward our own employees across both hospital campuses for their willingness to help meet our staffing needs, and believe it will significantly differentiate us in our local recruiting efforts."

St. Joseph's/Candler implemented BidShift as a means to fill shift vacancies in the most cost effective way with the appropriate skill level, create process efficiencies for managers, drive employee satisfaction and retention, and provide a competitive advantage for the recruitment of qualified staff. The hospitals are offering some shifts at straight pay while other harder to fill shifts include the option to bid down on a percentage of base pay bonus. This method rewards those who sign up first with the highest percentage amount and recognizes more experienced nurses by tying the bonus to their base pay rate. In the first weeks of implementation, over 1,100 nurses signed up to take part in the cutting-edge program, and over 3,400 shifts have been filled, averaging an 80% fill rate at both hospitals. St. Joseph's/Candler was able to pay first year costs of the BidShift program with the savings gained during the first two pay periods.

"BidShift promotes a shared responsibility for effective staffing that recognizes the commitment of existing employees and helps recruit and retain the workforce in today's highly competitive labor market labor market A place where labor is exchanged for wages; an LM is defined by geography, education and technical expertise, occupation, licensure or certification requirements, and job experience ," stated Bruce Springer springer
