Bible trumps council.May I take exception to Associate Editor Bryan Cones' remark ("Al-Salamu 'alaykum," The Examined Life, December) that Catholics are not burdened with the charge to "convert" Muslims. He quotes to that effect Lumen Gentium Lumen Gentium, the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, is one of the principal documents of the Second Vatican Council. Cones' mistake is to interpret a conciliar con·cil·i·ar adj. Of, relating to, or generated by a council: a conciliar appointment made by the governor; conciliar edicts. teaching contrary to clear biblical directives (Matt. 28:19; Mark 10:15-16; Acts 4:12).
