The company is a part of Bruker Biosciences Corporation (Nasdaq:BRKR) and specializes in mass spectrometry. The Bruker Daltonics headquarters are in Billerica, MA - USA and Bremen, Germany.  Inc. (NASDAQ: BDAL BDAL Battle Doll Angelic Layer (game) ) today announced a new collaboration that aims to advance proteomics research dramatically by associating critical functional information with mass spectrometric identification and characterization of novel proteins critical to the disease process.

This collaboration draws upon Biacore's status as a global market leader in providing functional information on biomolecular binding interactions using its proprietary surface plasmon resonance The excitation of surface plasmons by light is denoted as a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) for planar surfaces or localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) for nanometer-sized metallic structures.  (SPR spr Spring

(MS). Together, the companies aim to commercialize the combined technique of SPR-MS in order to create an exciting comprehensive platform for functional proteomics studies. This will help pharmaceutical and biotech companies fast track targets for validation and enable more rapid development of therapeutic compounds.

Clive Seymour, Vice President and Head of Life Science Research Business Unit at Biacore, commented: "This collaboration demonstrates Biacore's commitment to increasing the level of information that our SPR technology can provide for proteomics research. We believe the proteomics market will be worth $5.6 billion by 2005(1). Furthermore, we expect this growth to be fueled by the distinct advantages presented by the combination of our technologies. By adding functional data from Biacore to the molecular identification and characterization data obtained from Bruker Daltonics' MS systems, we hope to initiate a radical new approach for functional proteomics studies."

Cited in over 2000 peer-reviewed publications, Biacore's SPR technology is already well recognized as a key tool for functional analyses including protein-protein interactions, ligand fishing and now SPR-MS. Using unique microfluidics and sensor chip-based systems, this technology has enormous application in proteomics studies, allowing proteins and their function to be studied in a label-free, near native environment. In addition, it can act as a micropurification and recovery system to provide samples for further studies, such as mass spectrometry.

Bruker Daltonics is a leading supplier of life-science systems offering the growing proteomics research community a wide choice of MS-based research tools. Increasing the information content and understanding of functional complexes through the addition of affinity and kinetic molecular interaction data promises to offer new insights for proteomic studies, advancing them beyond current mapping, identification and differential expression approaches.

Dr. Michael Schubert, European Director of R&D at Bruker Daltonics, said: "We are delighted to be working alongside Biacore to develop and commercialize the SPR-MS technique. By integrating the SPR-MS systems and the complementary information they generate, we aim to add the unique functional information obtained using Biacore's SPR technology to proteomics databases, allowing users to correlate functional information with the identification and characterization data obtained from mass spectrometry."
