[Urdu begam, from East Turkic begüm, first person sing. , who ruled Bhopal from 1868 to 1901, that a network of underground tunnels, including the one that has been discovered, as well as the massive royal complex -- which included the Pari Bazaar, the Taj Mahal and the Benazir Palace -- were constructed. The massive tunnel is estimated to be more than 125 years old. " A tunnel was discovered when labourers were digging the road in the Pari Bazaar area. We sent our labourers down with a safety belt to examine it," an official of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation said. Officials immediately informed the Archaeological Survey of India The Archaeological Survey of India is an Indian government agency in the Department of Culture that is responsible for archaeological studies and the preservation of cultural monuments. ( ASI ASI, n See Anxiety Sensitivity Index. ) about their thrilling discovery on Wednesday. Members of the ASI have termed it a " phenomenal discovery". " A team of archaeologists who visited the site confirmed that what the workers had come across is indeed an ancient tunnel," says J. N. Malpani, director of the State Department of Archaeology, Archives and Museum. A member of the investigating team said initial studies found it to be an elaborate tunnel -- " one of the best they've ever found" -- that opens to a 35- feet wide room. This room then branches into two passageways -- one towards the Taj Mahal and another towards the Pari Bazaar and the Benazir Palace. Archaeological officer D. K. Mathur says, " The tunnel is six feet in height and four feet wide. It is made of brickwork and is cemented with lime. The roof is arched and the floor is made of stone." Archaeologists say the structure is an indication that it was used as a passage by the four begums who ruled Bhopal till 1926. They have directed officials of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation to ensure that the structure is not damaged during the ongoing civil work, Malpani says.
