Approaches to authority in the Christian Church, says Anglican theologian Avis, can broadly be divided between the monarchical and the conciliar. He explores the expressions and consequences of the approaches, mostly over the past thousand years. In order to examine the principles and theological basis of authority, its structures and organizations, and how it is exercised in practice, he draws on historical narrative, theological interpretation, and contemporary commentary. His goal is to identify beneficial and salutary forms of authority that will promote unity in the Church for the 21st century. First published in 2006.
