WACO, Texas--What gets university professors fired and high school biology teachers reassigned? The "intelligent design" movement, which challenges established Darwinian theories of how life developed on Earth. According to the intelligent design theory, "It is extremely improbable that the high level of complexity found in most life forms could have resulted from chance occurrences, as Darwinists believe," says Christianity Today.

According to biologist Michael Behe, a Catholic whose 1996 book Darwin's Black Box did much to boost the intelligent design movement, "Living things.., have turned out to be considerably less likely than science first thought," he writes in Books & Culture magazine. "Many cellular and biochemical systems.., are resistant to the usual Darwinian stories and are better understood as the result of deliberate intelligent design"-like a Creator.

A year ago Baylor University dismissed intelligent design proponent and scientist William Dembski, and veteran Burlington, Washington high school teacher Roger DeHart was reassigned for teaching intelligent design. "I'm just saying there is a controversy," DeHart tells Religion & Ethics Newsweekly, "and students need to be aware of it."
