Beyond chest pains.


How do you know if you're having a heart attack? Waiting for chest pains--the most common symptom in men--could be a mistake if you're a woman.

Researchers surveyed 515 women who had recently suffered a heart attack. Nearly half had no chest pain during their heart attacks.

Their other common symptoms:

* shortness of breath Shortness of Breath Definition

Shortness of breath, or dyspnea, is a feeling of difficult or labored breathing that is out of proportion to the patient's level of physical activity.

* weakness (55%)

* unusual fatigue (43%)

* cold sweat cold sweat

A reaction to nervousness, fear, pain, or shock, characterized by simultaneous perspiration and chill and cold moist skin.
 (39%)

During the months before their heart attacks, common symptoms were:

* unusual fatigue (71%)

* disturbed sleep (48%)

* shortness of breath (42%)

* indigestion indigestion or dyspepsia, discomfort during or after eating caused by some interference with the normal digestive process. Symptoms include nausea, heartburn, abdominal pain, gas distress, and a feeling of abdominal distention.  (39%)

* anxiety (36%)

. This study couldn't tell how common these symptoms are in women who don't go on to have a heart attack. Still, if you've noticed an increase in symptoms, see your doctor. The sooner a heart attack is detected, the lower your odds of permanent damage or death.
