This book presents the history of biological warfare and discusses related social and regulatory issues. After a history of biological warfare, the first five chapters cover smallpox, plague, tularemia, botulism, and the viral hemorrhagic fevers, with material on outbreak scenarios, microbiological considerations, epidemiology, and diagnostic issues. The next group of chapters covers other agents, such as epidemic typhus and various biotoxins. There are also chapters on public health infrastructure, public health law and biological terrorism, psychosocial management of bioterrorism events, and the role of the media. The book will serve as a reference point for clinicians, epidemiologists, public health personnel, and others on aspects of weapons of biowarfare and the appropriate responses to them. Larry Lutwick is director of the Infectious Disease Unit at the Brooklyn Campus of the Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Health Care System. Suzanne Lutwick is director of Grant Development for the Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation. Contributors include representatives of the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the UK's Defense Science and Technology Laboratory.
