Beyond NIMBY: Hazardous Waste Siting in Canada and the United States.

This work takes a refreshing approach to evaluating hazardous waste disposal policies in the United States and Canada. The phrase "not in my backyard" (NIMBY) has become associated with the strong opposition by most communities to having a hazardous waste site near their homes. As a result, the author argues that new facilities have been unable to open, and a viable, long-term management approach to dealing with hazardous waste management has been delayed. Instead of focusing on prevailing approaches that have led to the familiar NIMBY outcome, Rabe focuses on positive alternatives. He takes an in-depth look at successful siting strategies in Canada and the United States that have resulted in broad public support and successful waste management. The book concludes that some of these strategies can be successfully applied to current NIMBY-blocked proposals. This book should prove to be particularly helpful to citizens' groups and policy-makers.
