Beyond \be-and\.At or on the further side of ... not subject to limits ... Yes, this is the last issue of InsideMS for this century. Beyond lies the year 2000 and a whole new set of opportunities.... The Society has already exploited many opportunities to move beyond its original boundaries. New scientific knowledge has brought us to a halfway point for MS therapies. Avonex, Betaseron, and Copaxone, the new ABCs of MS, do not cure MS--and cure is our ultimate goal. But they are proven to slow down the underlying process of the disease. We have moved beyond treating only symptoms. The Society moved beyond one of its long-standing policies when our Medical Advisory Board endorsed the need for specific individual decisions regarding the use of one of the A, B, or C drugs. For the first time ever, the Society is recommending use of a treatment regime--that people with relapsing-remitting MS consider taking one of these 3 efficacious ef·fi·ca·cious adj. The rigorous international peer review process is not changing, but where we once solicited open-ended proposals, the Society is today requesting specific, targeted studies. The Society was able to take a leadership role in targeted research because we have a unique knowledge base from which to make forward-looking decisions. Our Task Force on Gender, MS, and Autoimmunity Autoimmunity The occurrence in an organism of an immune response to one of its own tissues, that is, a response to a self constituent. Efficient discrimination between self and nonself, the basis of normal immune function, depends upon a function known as identified gaps in scientific understanding of the sex differences in MS. Today we are requesting--and funding--proposals for studies designed to help answer these questions. Our ability to establish new directions for the world's MS researchers will be further extended by the strategic review of MS being undertaken by the National Academy of Sciences/Institute of Medicine. This 2-year independent review will ultimately take us beyond the limitations of the ABCs, and beyond our current constraints CONSTRAINTS - A language for solving constraints using value inference. ["CONSTRAINTS: A Language for Expressing Almost-Hierarchical Descriptions", G.J. Sussman et al, Artif Intell 14(1):1-39 (Aug 1980)]. . We do not accept those limits. We will go all the way. Working together, we will realize our dream: ending the devastating dev·as·tate tr.v. dev·as·tat·ed, dev·as·tat·ing, dev·as·tates 1. To lay waste; destroy. 2.
