Andy Bey Andrew W. Bey (born October 28, 1939 in Newark, New Jersey) is a jazz singer and pianist. He worked on a television show, Startime, with Connie Francis and sang for Louis Jordan. , long one of jazz's best-kept secrets, talk about his dynamic new CD

"Even if I weren't gay, I'd still be individual," says Andy Bey, discussing his latest album, Shades of Noun 1. shades of - something that reminds you of someone or something; "aren't there shades of 1948 here?"

 Bey (Evidence/12th Street Records). "I was always kind of different as a jazz artist, and I often stood alone." At age 59 the openly gay and HIV-positive jazz veteran still stands alone as a phenomenally expressive singer with a four-octave range.

 from Newark, N.J., Bey cut his first record, "Mama's little Boy's Got the Blues," at age 12. After leaving Newark's Arts High School in his senior year, Bey and two of his eight siblings left for Europe and settled in at the Blue Note in Paris for a year and a half. Billed as Andy and the Bey Sisters, they attracted jazz enthusiasts such as Marion Brando and Dietrich.

But his star encounters aren't his main source of pride. "I stuck with what I loved, and I learned a lot about myself through the music, I want to keep growing as an artist until the end of my life, as long as I can sit at a piano and sing."

As the years have passed, Bey says, he's gotten progressively more in touch with himself, as a musician and as a gay man. "You put yourself out there where you're comfortable, and if it makes others uncomfortable, that's too bad "That's Too Bad" is the debut single by Tubeway Army, the band which provided the initial musical vehicle for Gary Numan. It was released in February 1978 by independent London record label Beggars Banquet. ," he says. "You don't want to be angry if they don't get you, but if they do, well, that's a beautiful thing."
