Beware offers at meat counter.

SHOPPERS are urged to keep a cautious eye on multi-pack offers in butchers' shops in the run up to Christmas.

Members of the North East Trading Standards Association checked out bulk-buy meat bargains designed to tempt shoppers.

Butchers' shops in Northumberland, South Tyneside South Tyneside is a metropolitan borough in Tyne and Wear in North East England.

It is bordered by four other boroughs - Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead to the west, Sunderland in the south, and North Tyneside to the north.
, Newcastle, Durham and Stockton were visited and of the 38 stores, 20% had labels that could mislead customers.

By law, packs of meat are required to be marked with the weight of meat contained as well as price per kilogram kilogram, abbr. kg, fundamental unit of mass in the metric system, defined as the mass of the International Prototype Kilogram, a platinum-iridium cylinder kept at Sèvres, France, near Paris. , and the price of the actual pack.

Often butchers make offers that imply a reduced rate. But in some places the bulk "bargains" were found to be no cheaper and sometimes more expensive than single pack purchases.

Some packs also did not carry quantity or price, preventing shoppers from comparing.
