Bevin Boys reminisce.


FIFTEEN "Bevin Boys Bevin Boys were young British men conscripted to work in the coal mines of the United Kingdom, from December 1943 until the end of World War II. Chosen at random from among the conscripts, nearly 48,000 Bevin Boys performed vital but largely unrecognised service in the coal mines, " shared their wartime memories with library staff putting together a World War Two exhibition.

Six men and their families met at Chester Lane Library, in St Helens St Helens may refer to:

Places:
  • St Helens, Merseyside, England
  • St Helens RFC, rugby league club
  • St Helens Town F.C.
, while the others recorded their experiences over the phone.

Bevin Boys, the 10% of the male population who did not go to war, played an important role by keeping the coal supply flowing from mines across the region.

The exhibition will open at the library on September 4 and will visit Central Library in the town centre and Newton-le-Willows Library over two months.

Staff will also be visiting care homes to chat about residents' memories.
