Beverly McMaster, 43 President We Care Health Services Inc.

A prominent feature on the office wall at We Care is a row of wall-mounted clocks, one for each Canadian time zone. They remind the president of her goal: to have active franchises in each of them.

McMaster didn't think there was sufficient challenge in just being a nurse, a mother of four (now aged 12, 15, 19 and 21) and wife to a busy mathematics professor. So she went into business. She spent three years planning her three-sided enterprise: she provides graduate nurses for private service; companions for seniors; and homemakers for anyone who needs a hand around the house.

Five years later she has 14 franchises, from Barrie, Ontario to Kelowna, B.C., and a new one will open soon in Burnaby, B.C. She doesn't just sell franchises, but rather awards them to health-care entrepreneurs who commit themselves to a heavy program of ongoing training.

There are now 600 employees affiliated with We Care outlets, both part- and full-time. All franchises are profitable, and McMaster says this is due to a combination of planning and training.
