In his two-volume set, Polka (emeritus humanities and social and political thought, York U.) engages Baruch Spinoza Baruch de Spinoza (Hebrew: ברוך שפינוזה‎, Portuguese: Bento de Espinosa  (1632-77) as a thinker who is at once biblical and modern. The Dutch philosopher has been misunderstood when what is modern, philosophical or secular has been opposed to what is biblical, theological, or religious, he says, but Spinoza himself never proposed such an opposition. The first volume discusses hermeneutics hermeneutics, the theory and practice of interpretation.
