, the alliance between Caroline and Maizon grows. And when Maizon's father, who abandoned her when she was born, unexpectedly returns, she has to decide whether or not to accept him into her life.

Woodson, winner of several awards for her young adult books, puts many obstacles in the way of Margaret and Maizon's friendship. And the author doesn't offer a pat ending by neatly tying up all of the girls' problems by the book's conclusion. However, the problems that they have, force them to open up to each other and help breathe new life into their friendship.

With Between Madison and Palmetto, Woodson acknowledges that relationships go through many seasons. But through communication and honesty, true friendships can almost always weather the storms.--L. J.
