NEW YORK CITY BALLET New York City Ballet, one of the foremost American dance companies of the 20th cent. It was founded by Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine as the Ballet Society in 1946.  will celebrate the 100th birthday of co-founder GEORGE BALANCHINE in 2003-04 by reviving fifty-four of his works, commissioning premieres from SUSAN STROMAN (full-length), BORIS EIFMAN (his first for an American company), PETER MARTINS, and CHRISTOPHER WHEELDON (to an original score by James MacMillan). Guests for the season will include conductor VALERY GERGIEV and, from Balanchine's native region, the GEORGIAN STATE DANCE COMPANY, who will close the spring season at New York State Theater The New York State Theater is part of New York City's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts complex. The Miami City Ballet flourishes as one of America's most respected Balanchine-style based ballet companies.  will offer the company premieres of STRAVINSKY VIOLIN CONCERTO, SYMPHONY IN THREE MOVEMENTS, BALLO DELLA REGINA, and Act 1 of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM A Midsummer Night's Dream is a romantic comedy by William Shakespeare written sometime in the 1590s. It portrays the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of amateur actors, their interactions with the Duke and Duchess of Athens, Theseus and Hippolyta, and . OREGON BALLET THEATRE will be the first West Coast company to dance Balanchine's NUTCRACKER. His actual birthday is January 22, 2004.
