SENIOR home helps and district nurses could soon be helping to decide who in Coventry Coventry, city, England
Coventry (kŏv`əntrē, kŭv`–), city (1991 pop. 318,718) and metropolitan district, central England. Coventry is an industrial center noted for its automobile production.

They will be trained to carry out assessments currently done by social workers into the needs of vulnerable people living at home.

The proposal is part of a wider shake-up Noun 1. shake-up - the imposition of a new organization; organizing differently (often involving extensive and drastic changes); "a committee was appointed to oversee the reorganization of the curriculum"; "top officials were forced out in the cabinet shakeup"  by Coventry social services social services

into the way they decide who qualifies for help to stay at home.

More people are expected to qualify after the shake-up, which was due to be approved by the council today.

The idea is that if people can be offered a small amount of help at an early stage, it might prevent them from needing a lot more support later.

The council is also streamlining the process so only one assessment is carried out per person. Currently, they can undergo separate assessments for different services.

Care would then be provided either by the council, a private company, the health service, or a voluntary organisation - or a combination. Charges would remain as at present.

Cllr Kevin KEVIN Keepers of the Eternal Vigilance of the Islamic Nation (fictional, from White Teeth by Zadie Smith)  Maton (Lab, Whoberley), cabinet member for social services, said: "We could, for example, arrange for people to go to keep-fit activities because they don't get out and their fitness levels are reducing.

"We would arrange that voluntary organisations do the transport and the activities are done through the trust of the leisure centre.

"Now, that's got to better way of working with people so that in the end they don't suddenly find they're going into residential care because they've had a heart attack and can't look after themselves at home."

The city council has consulted with more than 50 people and organisations from Age Concern to SCOPE, the charity for people with cerebral palsy cerebral palsy (sərē`brəl pôl`zē), disability caused by brain damage before or during birth or in the first years, resulting in a loss of voluntary muscular control and coordination. .
