VILLA manager Martin O'Neill believes last night's victory over Blackburn was their 'best of the season'.

O'Neill insisted Villa had been so poor in the first half that to actually turn that performance into three points was a huge leap.

But he was more than happy to see Villa not only get out of jail but also move into the Premier League's top four. "It was our best win of the season because we were a million miles from being at our best," he said.

coming on in the second half probably gave us a bit more focus, maybe the goal before half time, whether we deserved it or not, we got.

"This is not my time to be gracious to anyone but I thought they were unlucky. But I am delighted with the effort of the players even though it was misguided.

"Our passing was poor. There was some clumsy defending at times, with players running into each other.

"But they conjured it from somewhere. Milner has worked a miracle for our second goal and Gabby gab·by

"I am really upbeat although it sounds from my conversation with you as if we have lost 12-0!

The top four is very pleasing indeed. If we had really put on a show I would have been ecstatic."

But O'Neill admitted he wanted to leave Carew on the bench to start with.

The striker was fined last weekend for breaking a club curfew curfew [O.Fr.,=cover fire], originally a signal, such as the ringing of a bell, to damp the fire, extinguish all lights in the dwelling, and retire for the night. The custom originated as a precaution against fires and was common throughout Europe in the Middle Ages.  but the Villa boss refused to give exact reasons the keep the Norwegian on the bench for the first 45 minutes.

"That is my decision. Allow me to pick the team. If I get it hopelessly wrong, I have to admit that," said O'Neill.

"We will have to do a bit of rotating now because we looked tired. We play Monday, Thursday, Sunday now and it will be asking a lot for the same group of players again.

"It's Gareth Barry's 14th game in six weeks - he may have to go for his 15th on Monday."
