It's been a fiery summer in Oregon's forests, and Team Best of ... feels just terrible about that. We get all sad and wistful when we drive up through Santiam Pass Santiam Pass (el. 4817 ft.) is a mountain pass in the Cascade Range in central Oregon in the United States. Still there is an upside to all this fire. And for proof, Team Best of ... points your attention to Waldo Lake.

Among the most pristine bodies of water in the universe, Waldo lost its compliment of big beautiful trees on the north side of the lake in a decimating conflagration in 1996.

Among the plants that have made a comeback: huckleberries, those succulent wild relatives of blueberries. We hear the trails around Waldo are a veritable Shangri-la of a fruit so fine the indigenous folk were known to torch the forests to encourage their growth.

Team Best of ... would never advocate for fire. But if it comes, we'll endure for the berry's sake.

Not every year is a good year for huckleberries. In 2005, the dearth of winter snow meant a bad year for the berries. It was so bad that Alice Smith Alice Smith (b. 1978) is an New York City-based singer, her style anchored in rock, R&B, blues, jazz and soul. This year, the pickings are much better - as long as you're willing to endure mosquitos.

Huckleberries come in a range of sizes and colors, from bright red and tart to blue-black and sweet. The bushes can be little more than a foot tall or tower over the bears who love the fruit as much as we do.

Generally smaller than blueberries, huckleberries pack a big burst of flavor whether fresh or baked in a pie or concocted into jam. Not that Team Best of ... has ever managed to get home with enough of them for actual baking.

But there's more to huckleberries than the joy of free grazing. For that we have blackberries - ubiquitous denizens of every empty lot and untamed stretch of roadside.

Huckleberries are something more, an ephemeral bit of summer that reminds us autumn rains loom on the horizon. We go looking for Looking for

We're just a tad too selfish to say exactly where we go to picking, but we can say that the trails at the north end of Waldo Lake will not disappoint.
