A former mining community, it depended upon the great coal mines nearby, which were developed in the 19th cent. or whitebeam, this wonderful tree provides all-year interest, producing large heads of pink-flushed flowers in late spring which then develop into beautiful red or white fruits in autumn. Birds don't like the white berries of S cashmiriana, the Kashmir, so they are left hanging, adding interest when much else has faded and long after the leaves have fallen. If you want a columnar specimen, S aucuparia 'Fastigiata' may fit the bill, reaching a height of 6m and producing clusters of ripe red berries.
