. The top companies were selected and ranked by the Great Place to Work(R) Institute, a research and management consultancy which produces several "Best Companies to Work for" lists, including Fortune magazine's annual list of the "100 Best Companies to Work for in America."

In this inaugural small and medium companies list, more than 400 companies nationwide and 18,000 employees were surveyed. A "medium" company is defined as one with 251 to 999 U.S.-based employees. Russell employs 920 in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  and more than 1,300 worldwide. The study includes an extensive attitude survey which is distributed to 250 randomly selected employees at each nominated firm.
