"The first four months of the campaign were wonderful but this has been a nightmare start to the second quarter," said the Borderers' manager whose side have failed to score in their last four games.

He added: "It looked as though it was a day when we were determined to throw points away and in that we achieved our goal.

"We now have to try to find one if not two leaders from the squad. The only bright spot for Coughlin is that Robbie Horn is back while central defender Mark Cowan is recovering from injury.

Craig Coyle came to Rangers rescue in the first half pulling off a double save from George Wallace and Stephen Reid before Stephen Donaghy squandered a great chance for Albion. He pounced on a poor pass back and rounded the keeper only to shoot wide.

Rovers winner came in 70 minutes when Kevin Haynes, who had looked more impressive when he retreated to defend, sliced a clearance in the box and Chris McGroarty mis-kicked leaving Scott Chaplain to fire home. Rangers desperate sought an equaliser and Gareth Hutchison was twice denied.
