Bertelsmann Subsidiary BOL.de Selects RedDot Content Management System; EINSTEINet Implements BOL.de Web Site with RedDot Content Management Server 4.1 and Intershop Enfinity.

Business/Technology Editors

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 27, 2002

RedDot Solutions, a leading provider of enterprise content management solutions, announces that Bertelsmann Online (www.bol.de), Bertelsmann AG's German Internet, media and entertainment store, has integrated RedDot's Content Management Server (CMS (1) See content management system and color management system.

(2) (Conversational Monitor System) Software that provides interactive communications for IBM's VM operating system.
) 4.1, into the site management system.

In addition to managing the redesign, service provider EINSTEINet also integrated the RedDot system into the Intershop Enfinity electronic trade platform and developed and integrated a continuous content deployment process. RedDot CMS replaced another well-known enterprise content management system.

BOL.de customers can browse nearly 900,000 books, 200,000 music CDs, 6,500 videos and 2,400 DVDs, as well as more than 3,000 software programs and computer games. The virtual media store opened in February 1999. BOL.de is joined by local sites in UK, NL, and CH.

The BOL site comprises approximately 20,000 pages per country, of which100 pages are created or updated every day by 100 editors in three countries. RedDot CMS 4.1 is used to administer the sites in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the UK.

A key challenge for e-tailers is managing editorial texts (product descriptions, product teaser teaser

texts etc.) since the shop system does not itself include a user interface for editors. The goal was to create a content management system that could process content and smoothly integrate it into the e-store.

BOL.de needed an interface between the content management system and the e-store system that editors could easily use. RedDot CMS takes the newly entered content (such as book reviews, interviews, etc.) and transforms it into files containing all the necessary meta-information for the Intershop system. An interface developed by EINSTEINet then translates the files into Intershop format and distributes them among the various destination systems. Intershop then exports the pages to the customer's browser, adding user-specific data and information for ordering purposes.

Editors can now simply and intuitively administer content using RedDot's SmartEdit technology without any technical expertise. To facilitate their work, the site interface was copied in RedDot to give editors the feel of working directly in the site itself. In addition, the solution developed by EINSTEINet enables editors to clearly identify and edit specific catalogue pages, e.g., product websites or category pages, and add new freely defined pages. The shop system identifies these processes and transforms the content into the appropriate Intershop cue.

Pages created are continuously checked in a preview environment that mirrors the live environment before the content is published.

Another challenge was to transfer existing data from other databases - a total of 20,000 to 50,000 data records per country Web site - to the RedDot Content Management Server. EINSTEINet's developers based their tools on the RedDot Query Language A generalized language that allows a user to select records from a database. It uses a command language, menu-driven method or a query by example (QBE) format for expressing the matching condition.  (RQL RQL Reddot Query Language

) application interface.

It took only six weeks to successfully complete the entire project. It serves as a further joint reference project for RedDot and EINSTEINet, who have already collaborated on implementing other major RedDot projects.
