Though the name was applied (c. For Orchestra; Five Songs. Recorded in 1999, at Orchestra Hall, Minneapolis. Engineer: Keith Johnson. 65+ minutes. Reference Recordings RR-87CD. This is an exceptional transcription, perhaps one of the best two-channel recordings available, with notable depth and a wonderfully realistic spread to the soundstage. (All of this without HDCD (High Definition Compatible Digital) A digital processing technique that increases fidelity on audio CDs, developed by Keith Johnson and Michael "Pflash" Pflaumer. decoding at my end of the recording chain, by the way.) Pro Logic decoding works quite well, but only if the center level is backed off the usual -3 dB. DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive ambiance simulation was superb, and notably better than the already terrific reproduction in straight stereo. The best DSP with my two Yamaha processors involved the Classical/Opera mode, which utilizes a derived center. The level had to be backed off -3 dB, however, just like with DPL (Digital PowerLine) An earlier technology for transmitting a 1 Mbps data signal over electric power lines from Nortel Networks. It was developed in the late 1990s, but later abandoned due to implementation difficulties. See broadband over power lines. . A Parasound AVC-2500 I had on hand to review worked well in the main system, and the "Hall" mode available from the Outlaw receiver currently installed in my living room system also dovetailed nicely with this program material. None of the DSP modes bloated the sound of the solo vocalist, a rarity. --HF |
