Bernalillo County Reduces Mobile Communications Costs and Produces a Measurable Increase in Worker Productivity

Similar to businesses within the private sector, Bernalillo County evaluates itself based on two goals - increasing worker efficiency and lowering operational costs. The county made an initial decision to focus on mobilizing its workforce as its first area of improvement. The initial project consisted of providing mobile phones to select employees. However, the county found that the resulting improvement in productivity did not justify the increased cellular expenses. Moreover, people were still tethered to their desks to use desk phones and to access key applications on their laptops. The County looked for a solution that could mobilize workers with a broad range of applications without incurring a significant increase in cellular charges and leveraging its WLAN network.

Bernalillo County runs a Cisco Wireless LAN (WLAN) and the Cisco Call Manager PBX. The county turned to DiVitas Mobile UC to solve its mobile-communications business challenges. The county selected Nokia's E71 Eseries smartphones to run the DiVitas Client because of its sleek and easy to use design, long battery life and its support for Java-based applications. The county also runs the SAP Mobile Assets Management (MAM) application on their Nokia devices, along side the DiVitas Mobile UC application.
