Valerie Young and her mother, Annie Young, manage the store. A younger sister, Patricia, does silk screening and creates many of the T-shirts that are sold at True Reflections. In recent years, Annie Young has seen a shift in the buying habits of True Reflections' largely female clientele. "The nature of relationships between men and women has changed dramatically in Bermuda," she says. She comments that women are buying more romance, but continue to buy inspirational books, too. A large percentage of business at True Reflections occurs during the peak tourists season, December through April, "when the [cruise] ships come in." Although the impact of the September 11, 2001, tragedy has had an enormous impact on the travel and tourism industries, Mrs. Young says she and her daughters see signs of recovery. Their current location, the third since the store opened, affords them access to foot traffic and to taxis that bring the tourists-largely American, Canadian and British-in search of souvenirs, beach reads and books by the island's authors. Among the Bermudian writers Mrs. Young recommends are Dale Butler, Patricia Frith, John P. Furbert and Cyril Packwood. The prolific Butler is an educator who also runs The Writer's Machine, a publishing company that specializes in books by and about Bermudians, since 1976.
