Bermuda Digital Communications selects Phoenician AMPS for brand new cellular system.

MAITLAND, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 3, 1997--Phoenix Wireless Group, Inc. announced Monday it has been awarded a contract by Bermuda Digital Communications Transmitting text, voice and video in binary form. See communications.  Limited (BDC (Backup Domain Controller) In a Windows NT server, a copy of the Primary Domain Controller (PDC). The BDC is periodically synchronized with the PDC. See PDC.

BDC - Backup Domain Controller
) to supply its software based Phoenician(tm) AMPS cellular infrastructure equipment to cover the entire island and the surrounding coast line of Bermuda.

Phoenix also will provide BDC related support services support services Psychology Non-health care-related ancillary services–eg, transportation, financial aid, support groups, homemaker services, respite services, and other services , including training and system design. The system will be operational by June of 1997.

This multiple cell site system will be run by Phoenician(tm) software release 3.0 which includes new enhanced wireline/wireless subscriber features, Intra-system hand-off, IS-41B roaming, and remote OA&M with monitor mode capability. OA&M monitor mode allows the operator to manage the entire system from a centralized location.

The general philosophy behind the Phoenician(tm) paradigm is to use general purpose computers to run telephone networks. That allows Phoenix to place its proprietary call model software on a commercially available workstation, as opposed to being embedded in the switch in the traditional manner. In this way, the development time, effort, and cost of providing new services and features is minimized, and inherently, the Phoenician(tm) System has a large degree of flexibility. For instance, the software program MONET, which is for management of the network, allows for Dynamic Forward Power Control. Used in conjunction with multi-channel, high power linear amplifiers, MONET constantly sets the traffic channel power in order to perfectly balance the forward and reverse paths. This limits unnecessary downlink signal in the overall network which extends the coverage radius of the base transceiver station Base Transceiver Station (BTS) is the equipment which facilitates the wireless communication between user equipments (UE) and the network. UEs are devices like mobile phones (handsets), WLL phones, computers with wireless internet connectivity, WiFi and WiMAX gadgets etc.  without undue adjacent channel interference. With spectrum at a premium, this will allow BDC to maximize coverage, capacity, and signal quality.

"Phoenix is playing an integral role in the evolution of telecommunications here as Bermuda moves from a duopoly Duopoly

This is very similar to a monopoly, where only one company dominates the market.
to full competition. We are looking forward to providing the customers on this island the most advanced cellular infrastructure equipment and services," said Kurt Eve, chairman and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Bermuda Digital Communications. "As we strive to meet the needs of our customers the Phoenician(tm) System will go a long way in doing this."

"Three major factors won this contract for Phoenix," said Michael Leverock, chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

The officer of a firm responsible for day-to-day management, usually the president or an executive vice-president.
for Bermuda Digital Communications. "One: In Bermuda real estate is extremely expensive and difficult to obtain. Space conservation is very important to us. Because the Phoenician(tm) System incorporates the functions of the BSC (Binary Synchronous Communications) See bisync.  and MSC (1) (MSC.Software Corporation, Santa Ana, CA, www.mscsoftware.com) Founded in 1963 by Richard H. MacNeal and Robert G. Schwendler, MSC is the world's largest provider of mechanical computer aided engineering (MCAE) strategies, simulation software and services.  into software, it does not use a large proprietary switch; consequently, it requires little operational space. Two: The low initial cost of the system will allow us to be profitable at an accelerated pace. Third: Even though it is smaller and less costly, it is every bit as powerful and more flexible than a traditional wireless system."

"The signing of this contract is another milestone for our company. It is our first in a developed nation with a dense population. It will prove out that in one system, operators can have a full featured, cost effective wireless system. The entire Phoenix team is very excited to be working on this project for Bermuda Digital," said Paul Mueller, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Phoenix Wireless.

Bermuda Digital Communications, Ltd. was awarded a telecommunications license to operate a cellular system earlier this year. BDC is the A-side carrier and upon completion of the system buildout, will compete against Bermuda Telephone Company Ltd..

Phoenix Wireless Group develops, markets and operates turnkey, fixed wireless telephony telephony without wires, usually employing electric waves of high frequency emitted from an oscillator or generator, as in wireless telegraphy. A telephone transmitter causes fluctuations in these waves, it being the fluctuations only which affect the receiver.
